Before The First Supper / 最初の晩餐の前に

2023
Installation with Audio Piece

Before The First Supper is an installation developed through repeated visits and field research in the areas affected by the Great East Japan Earthquake, prompted by the centennial of the Great Kantō Earthquake in 2023.

Throughout conversations with survivors and their families, one message was repeatedly expressed:

"Rather than asking people to remember our grief, we hope this experience continues to create opportunities for learning and reflection."

The work considers recovery and death not as isolated events, but as overlapping layers of record and memory. Cities may be rebuilt, yet memories remain. The body may disappear, yet one's presence continues to exist through the memories of others.

We live by carrying both recorded history and personal memory. Through their intersection, the installation quietly asks what we inherit, and how those inheritances are carried forward into the future.

Rather than looking back on the past, Before The First Supper proposes a table around which records and memories can gather—a place where new conversations may begin.
