In 2023, 100 years have passed since the Great Kanto Earthquake.

This year became an opportunity to learn about the earthquake anew and confront its legacy.

During several visits and stays in the disaster-affected areas of Tohoku, I spent time with survivors and their families, which led me to reconsider the concepts of "reconstruction" and "death."

Reconstruction is not merely about the physical rebuilding of a city, and death is not solely the end of physical life.

"We don't want to simply convey the fact that the disaster happened or the sorrow it caused. Instead, we want people to learn from it and create opportunities for reflection."

The survivors spoke these words with unwavering conviction.

Records and memories.

Human beings live while facing these two forms of the past.

By confronting the two "deaths" that mirror each other, we are compelled to consider how to communicate with them.

Perhaps, it is ultimately about reflecting on what it means for us to "live."
