Unmanifest / 無形
2026
Installation
What allows us to perceive something as existing?
Unmanifest approaches the coffin not as a symbol of death, but as a form that evokes someone who once existed. Without depicting either the body or the soul directly, the work seeks to allow presence to emerge through absence, inviting the viewer to recognize existence through what is no longer there.
The title Unmanifest does not refer to non-existence. Rather, it describes a state in which something exists but has not yet become perceptible. Through this work, Hosoi quietly questions what it is that allows us to recognize existence, and where the boundary of that recognition lies.
